Microsoft Corp. has started testing on Monday a new server software that allows corporate customers to make phone calls over the Web through its Office suite of business software.

Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007, due to release during the quarter April to June 2007, will push the software giant in the market for enterprise telephony at a time when many large companies shift to cheaper telecommunications powered Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).

The new voice server will allow users to instantly call anyone from the Office applications by clicking on a person `s name and to launch an appeal.

For example, a worker who receives an e-mail in Office Outlook from various colleagues can click on each colleague `s name to check availability and place a phone person to person by phone or arrange a conference phone.
