Unlocked Cell Phone Deals

I am based in the United Kingdom, and I always heard that most the United States, you get good deals on most electronic devices. One of my friends who happens more in New York and could have a look to get a cell phone. I want to do some research and guide.

I checked Best Buy and Wal-Mart sell unlocked phones, they seem to offer better deals (at least in line do not know if a store can get the same). However, it also seems that there are three types of mobile phones,
- The AT & T contract, mobile, etc. - we have a local address is a must to get one, I heard that you can pay a cancellation fee and get rid of the contract, but anyway, it seems too much trouble, although the offers seem pretty good (if i neglect the fact that the cancellation fee, it can be quite expensive)
