Basic business skills required The following is an excerpt from my new book, "morphing into the real world - how to enter the labor market" is a survival guide for young people in their transition to adulthood. The book offers advice considerable variance in how to manage our personal and professional lives. As part of this, I find it necessary to describe the basic business skills required by the business world today.
Basic business skills required
I can not list all the business skills, you will need to meet your particular line of work. However, there are more basic skills you need to perform effectively in any office:
* Computer skills - in all likelihood, you will need to interact with a computer in some way during the conduct of business, whether to place an order, tracking a shipment, save your time, or write a letter or memo. As such, you should familiarize yourself with the basic operation of a computer. Most high schools today do a fair job of teaching the basics, but if you missed the course, there are many places where you can receive training, such as public libraries associations and community service. Of course, there are also training programs, you can also attend.
In addition to using the keyboard, mouse and monitor, one of the most important things to learn is the concept of "computer clipboard" that is used to copy and paste data from one program to another For example, from a spreadsheet to a word processing document. When you use a computer, it is one of the most common features that you use actively. In addition, learning the basics of computer system management of files, for example, organization of files, file types used, and how to search the computer for its content.
Also learn how to use the facilities of using the computer to help in problem areas. Most programs use similar facilities help making it easy to learn and follow.
* Word Processing - Word processing is perhaps the most popular programs used on a computer and there are a variety of programs available, offering comparable features. Besides type of database, you must learn how to format a document in terms of setting up margins, page numbering, headers and footers, and selection of fonts (typeface and size). More importantly, learn to use effectively correcting spelling and grammar. I'm amazed how many people use word processors still knows little about how to use these facilities. Therefore, a letter may seem attractive, but graphically is flooded with misspellings and poor sentence structures.
* Spreadsheets - if your work requires that all basic number crunching, you'll probably learn to use a spreadsheet. Their ability to perform basic mathematics is an incredible time saver. Spoil yourself and learn to express a formula (eg, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division). You can not imagine how many people use spreadsheets yet still perform the calculation manually. Pretty scary.
* Graphics - office workers will inevitably need to work with graphics, if nothing more than scanning, cropping and scaling photographs and illustrations. They may not need to know how to use robust design tools (unless they are in this sector), but they need to know how to perform basic graphic manipulation. In addition, depending on your assignments, you may need to learn to use a slide presentation software, eg Microsoft PowerPoint, Lotus Freelance, etc. presentation aids are useful for sales and training situations .
