Possible lightning damage to the telephone system (UK) ..? A few weeks ago my router / modem and PC packed and at first I thought I did not offer BT Broadband. The BT engineer called and confirmed that my broadband connection was good, but it seems my router has completely failed and the network adapter on my PC had also failed. He said that lightning had hit my neighbors property, the same day that I was wrong (blowing their own BT phone booth) and I had probably suffered a damaging surge as a result. I replaced the router / modem and had fitted a new motherboard and I am now back online. However, I am left with severe cracking on some of my phones at home, a fine work a phone. Can anyone advise if other phones can be damaged by power surges or the phone booth / outlet filters or broadband? And what do I do to test a fault? Any advice appreciated .......... Cheers
Lightning is a funny thing, it is impossible to say what is and is not damaged when it arrives on a power or telephone line. I do not know how BT does things, but here in the U.S. box on the side of your house protective devices called carbon in it to help protect the circuit inside the equipment. After a near-lightning they can be damaged and cause a noise on the line, but I think it would be all phones. You can check with BT back and ask about it. Hope this helps.
