What IP telephony service do you need to use a Cisco IP phone?

I really like the Cisco Unified IP Phone 7940G and the like. What type of VoIP service do I have to use these types of phones? What the labor service phone.com? (Just standard VoIP?)

any company that uses SIP VoIP can be used with this phone ... It seems that is what phone.com uses ...

most companies use VoIP SIP ... It is the industry standard .. There are few companies that still use proprietary protocols for service to VoIP (Skype, and ooma come to mind)
