International Phone Rates

My girlfriend is more to Barcelona in Spain for the school for four months. If the guy talking on the phone for hours! I have Verizon Wireless and flat rate for international calls is like $ 1.35. Too much for me. But those cheap pay as you go phones have good rates. What is the best for less / per cents per minute? And please do not mention the test Skype, we have already, and both of us cannot always be on the computer, so its a no go. Thank you!
