HTC S710 Mobile Phone A smart phone with a slide-out keyboard is not exactly a rarity these days but this model stands out from its competitors because it lacks the girth of a Russian weightlifter. In fact, barely thicker than your average candybar phone. The other big news is that it runs the new version of the Microsoft OS Mobile - Windows Mobile 6. Orange will be branding the handset as the E650, so if you are on the network, you can get it free on contract. Others will be able to pick it up for around £ 270 in the HTC S710. Design The HTC S710 is the best looking Windows smart phone we've seen for a long time. The metal mirror that circles around the front of the phone contrasts perfectly with black style from the rest of the equipment and plastic rubber at the rear, it is comfortable to grip by hand.
The sleek design is even more impressive than the body of the phone hides a full QWERTY keyboard. For the keyboard you just tap the screen to the left. When the keyboard pops up, bright and vivid screen automatically switches from portrait to landscape mode giving it much the same sensation as a PDA clamshell.
The slide-out keyboard is a good size and has backlit keys
We would not exactly describe the spacious keyboard, but it's almost big enough for typing with two fingers. The keys are also backlit, so you'll have no problem tapping text messages or e-mails on the way home after a night out.
Of course, you do not always use the slide-out keyboard to control the phone. Each element of the software can also be driven by the keyboard on the front. This twin keys at the top with a large pad that makes it easy to navigate menus. The keys, however, are a little on the small side, then split the QWERTY keyboard is probably the best option when you type text messages or e-mail along.
To synchronize the phone with your PC there is a mini-USB port on the bottom. It is also used for charging the handset and connect the headphones to use with the integrated media player.
Features
This is the first device we've seen who is running the latest version of Microsoft's phone OS - Windows Mobile 6 - which was formerly known under the name of your crossbow. In addition to the spruced-up icons, most of the user interface does not look so different from the previous version.
There have been some changes here and there, however. For example, the call history is now placed next to the names in the list of contacts and the calendar has been updated with a practical overview of new appointments at the bottom of the screen.
Microsoft has also improved messaging functionality. You can now resize the text in emails, what is proper because it means less scrolling when reading long messages, and for the first time you get help for HTML email.
The update is the inclusion of other major new XT9 predictive text messaging. It differs from the standard T9 software by the inclusion of automatic spelling correction and forecasting next letter. What this means in practice a list of predicted words appears at the bottom of the screen while you type. So if you want to enter "follows" just crazy "type", then select the whole word predicted from this list. It is useful for those who are slow to send SMS, but speed demons often find it quicker to just type the whole word rather than scroll through the list provided to find the right one.
